Michigan Judge Extends Kalshi Sports Ban Until August 12

A Michigan court has prolonged a temporary restraining order that blocks Kalshi from trading sports-event contracts within the state. The ruling grants the prediction market platform until August 12 to deploy required geofencing measures.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina issued the extension on Monday, maintaining the prohibition on sports-related wagering products. The court allocated a 30-day window for the technology rollout and specified that failure to install the location-verification system by the deadline will trigger daily penalties of $500,000.

Technical Requirements and Background

The geofencing system must accurately restrict contract access to users physically located inside Michigan. Kalshi must complete the implementation and demonstrate full functionality before the August 12 cutoff. The daily financial penalty will apply immediately if the system remains unverified after that date.

The initial court order suspended Kalshi’s sports contracts to allow time for the technical adjustment. The extension preserves the current trading limitations while the company finalizes the location-tracking infrastructure.
