The Star Entertainment has settled two tax disputes with the Australian Commissioner of Taxation, resulting in an AU$33m refund. The resolution covers financial assessments for the company's Australian operations for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026.
The operator initially transferred AU$88m to the tax authority during the review process. Under the settlement terms, The Star will record a charge of approximately AU$55m for the current reporting period. The disagreements centered on the goods and services tax classification of rebates provided to junket tour operators and the withholding tax calculation method for related payments.
Operational Developments
The Star ended its junket tour operator arrangements in October 2020, before the tax assessments began. The group also confirmed the appointment of a new dual chief executive officer for the Star Gold Coast and Star Brisbane venues last month.Source: Richard Hollis, Regulatory.
