Bristol authorities detained two individuals on 10 July following a coordinated raid on an unlicensed gambling venue. Both suspects were subsequently released on bail while investigations continue.

Officers from the Harbourside Neighbourhood Policing Team, the Gambling Commission and the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit executed a search warrant at a Lower College Street location. A 36-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman were taken into custody on suspicion of gambling offences. "Community intelligence plays a vital role in tackling criminal activity and keeping our neighbourhoods safe," Sergeant Michael Friis stated, urging residents to report suspicious venues.Commission Funding and Recent Cases
The Gambling Commission received £26 million in government funding in May to strengthen enforcement efforts over a three-year period. Acting Chief Executive Sarah Gardner announced the allocation at the Bingo Association annual general meeting, specifying a focus on land-based gambling sites. This raid follows a similar operation in Manchester last month, where a 33-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman were detained.Separately, the Commission concluded a 2024 investigation into an election betting case last month. Craig Williams, former parliamentary private secretary to Rishi Sunak, and Amy Hind, wife of Conservative deputy digital director Anthony Hind, pleaded guilty to cheating offences. The pair placed wagers on the general election timing in May 2024, shortly before Sunak confirmed a July date.
